Comment spam is a fact of life if you have a blog. One way to combat it is to make commenters add a code that is unreadable to spambots. You’ll notice a few new plugins added to help you in this - Spam Karma, Bad Behavior and Peter’s Custom Anti-Spam. If you use Spam KArma it’s unlikely that you’ll need Peter’s Custom Anti-Spam. Celebrated in the blogosphere, a combination of these should keep out the spambots. Activate them in the plugins section to dramatically reduce the amount of spam you get.

Things are looking good after the recent move to our new server. We’ve negotiated an Akismet key with the great guys over at Wordpress; Akismet is a superb spamtrapper. Activate the plugin, and use this key to restrict the comment spam you’re getting:

Those using ethink in schools should advise their students to apply it too. While we make every endeavour to monitor ethink blogs, it really is up to teachers to see what their students are up to.

Moving Home

eThink is in the process of moving home to a new server. We’re trying to make it as painless as possible for you - you shouldn’t notice the difference - but there might just be some hiccups. Please bear with us for a few days and don’t post anything vital until you see the OK here. We’re trying not to lose anything, but hey, we’re just human. Barely human, some say.

New themes

New themes have been added to the collection Check out your presentation pages.For working straight out of the box, themes are a bit hit and miss. Wordpress themes ought to just work but sometimes need tweaking for Wordpress Multiuser (which is what you are looking at). Thankfully, there are now a number of themes that support the Widgets.

If you see a theme you like and you want it installed, let me know where it is (dfjones AT technologist.com)and I will gladly install it, providing it works in this environment. There are some lovely ones out there; see this site for a few good ones.

Allowing filetypes

After we discovered a problem with uploading m4a files, we have now installed a plugin to allow you to change the filename extensions you want to allow. The syntax is a bit different but fear not - here are a few of the ones you are likely to want to add:

m4a audio/m4a

m4b audio/m4b

kmz application/vnd.google-earth.kmz (for google earth files)

Firstly activate teh plugin, then go to Options -> Mime Types to add more types.

Wikispaces Integration

We’ve said it for ages, wiki is a great tool for developing collaborative projects in the same way that blogging helps to build a personal voice and conversation on the web. We’re very excited therefore about working with Wikispaces, and over the summer we ar working towards offering a free Wikispaces signup with every eThink blog, done automatically for new blogs and easily created retrospectively from existing eThink blogs. Tagging enhanced podcasts

After a recent update, eThink now recognises the .m4a extension for enhanced podcasts and will create rss enclosures for these files. These play in the Quicktime viewer or in iTunes.
